“Frost-laden trees—the first time I encountered this scenery was in the winter of 2012, during a visit to Mount Moriyoshi, tucked away in Akita’s Ani area. I remember the day vividly: a cold wave swept through Tohoku, plunging temperatures near the summit to a brutal minus 20°C.
With visibility low in the thick fog and falling snow, these shapes emerged faintly, as if white creatures were absorbing the mist and snow, growing larger and more alive. They seemed posed to move; a strange presence lingering in their deep, blue shadows amid the blizzard, drawing me in with a quiet allure.
Since then, I have made my way to Zao, Hakkoda, and Moriyoshi, especially seeking out days of cold waves and harsh weather. Immersed in these ethereal forests, I have captured the ever-shifting forms of nature.”
- Tomoki Hirokawa, “Floating in the Snow”
